New indication for the prevention of major cardiovascular events.
Crestor is proven to prevent major cardiovascular events such as stroke, heart attack or the need to have major surgery to restore impaired blood flow to the heart.11
This new indication is for people who have no history of cardiovascular events but who have two or more risk factor groups including:
- » Diabetes
- » High blood pressure
- » Family history of cardiovascular events
- » High cholesterol
- » Being a smoker
- » Being of Maori, Pacific Island or Indian descent
A major investigation known as the JUPITER study was the basis for this indication. The study examined nearly 18,000 patients with low to moderate LDL (bad) cholesterol.*
Taking 20mg of Crestor was shown to reduce the relative risk of major cardiovascular events by 44% (absolute reduction of 1.2%).
Major cardiovascular events were defined as any of the following:
- » Myocardial infarction (heart attack)
- » Stroke
- » Unstable angina
- » Death from cardiovascular causes
- » Arterial revascularisation (surgery to restore impaired blood flow to the heart)
Your cardiovascular risk percentage (%) is determined by;
(a) The risk factors you have for a cardiovascular event (e.g. age, family history, cholesterol level, blood pressure, diabetes) and;
(b) The number of people like you who are predicted to have a cardiovascular event in the next five years.
By reducing one or more of your risk factors, you reduce your risk of an event. The difference between your original risk (%) and the new risk (%) is called the relative risk reduction.
The absolute risk reduction is the difference in risk shown between the treated group and the untreated group in a given study.
*Patients were enrolled if their LDL < 3.4mmol/L. At baseline the mean LDL was 2.8mmol/L.
